CONFIGURATIONS
The NEMA 5-15 plug/power outlet system is in general use in the USA and Canada but is also in use internationally. In North America, Central America, Columbia, Venezuela and Ecuador this system is a standard for Class II apparatus. In addition, this plug is also used in Korea and Taiwan. The contact pattern of NEMA 1 - 15P also fits into Japanese power outlets, but Japan has its own standard and an own approval symbol (see „Japanese plug“).

The NEMA 1-15P plug has two flat, folded, bright brass pins. Upon request, solid, nickel-plated flat brass pins can be delivered. The center-to-center distance between the contact pins is 12.7 mm. The size of the pins is identical for the standard design. Therefore, the plug can be inserted into the power outlet in any direction and is thus not polarized.

For specific apparatus, a polarized, two-pole plug is prescribed. In such as case, the tip of one flat pin is broader so that the plug can only be inserted in one direction into the appropriate power outlet.
